# How to compare model numbers, GTINs and product bundles

Published by Muchita AI · Updated 2026-09-22 · Canonical: https://shopping.muchita.ai/guides/product-model-number-comparison/

Two listings can show the same product name and sell different purchases. Before comparing prices, match the complete model, variant, package and condition, then check whether you can actually buy each offer.

## In short

- A model number or GTIN helps establish identity. It does not, by itself, establish condition, package contents or eligibility.
- Separate alternatives from exact matches. Rank verified matching item prices on the same currency and tax basis; disclose shipping separately.
- The tablet and prices below are fictional teaching examples, not live offers.

## What counts as the same product?

Write one sentence describing what you want: full model, generation, storage or size, colour, region, included parts and condition. Use it for every seller. A cheaper alternative may suit you, but it does not establish a lower price for that exact purchase.

The [US FTC's comparison-shopping guidance](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/online-shopping) recommends recording manufacturer or model details and reading the full offer terms. Also verify availability, seller identity, currency, tax basis and any membership or trade-in requirement.

For a complete price-check walkthrough, read our [same-product field note](https://shopping.muchita.ai/guides/same-product-price-comparison/). This guide focuses on finding and interpreting the identifiers before you fill in the [comparison worksheet](https://shopping.muchita.ai/tools/price-comparison/).

## Find and cross-check the identifiers

Keep the product page open while checking the identifiers. A search result is a lead; the selected offer must support the match.

1. **Copy the complete code** Look in the specification table, packaging label or manufacturer support page. Preserve suffixes. Record the brand and manufacturer part number (MPN), not just the shop's stock code. [Google's MPN guidance](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324482?hl=en) distinguishes manufacturer identifiers and product variants.
2. **Search the brand and code together** Find the manufacturer's matching specification or manual. Check the generation and selected configuration against it. If the title, code and specification disagree, ask the seller which item will ship.
3. **Check the GTIN when supplied** UPC and EAN are GTIN types described in [Google's GTIN guidance](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en). Copy the number without guessing missing digits. [GS1 Ireland explains](https://resources.gs1ie.org/helpdesk/how-do-i-find-out-who-owns-a-gtin-or-barcode) how Verified by GS1 checks number validity, the associated company and available product data.
4. **Check what the code does not answer** Read the selected variant, package inventory, condition and purchase terms. Save the URL, date and relevant wording. Missing product data in a lookup is an unresolved check, not permission to assume a match.

## Eight listings, one exact-match saving

Our invented target is the ExampleTab T2: generation 2, 256 GB, black, UK version, new, with its standard tablet-and-cable pack. All prices are invented GBP item prices including the same tax basis. Assume all rows are in stock. Row A is the reference; no row represents a real retailer.

| Offer / item price | Compared with A | What you would buy |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A: £300 | Reference | T2-256-BK-UK, generation 2, 256 GB, black; standard pack, new, UK; any buyer, outright |
| B: £270 | Match: £30 lower | Identical model, variant, standard pack, condition, UK region and outright eligibility |
| C: £220 | Different generation | T1-256-BK-UK: generation 1; other stated conditions match A |
| D: £240 | Different variant | T2-128-WH-UK: 128 GB, white; other stated conditions match A |
| E: £290 | Different bundle | T2-256-BK-UK standard pack plus a keyboard; other stated conditions match A |
| F: £230 | Different condition | T2-256-BK-UK, refurbished; other stated conditions match A |
| G: £250 | Region unresolved | T2-256-BK with no confirmed region; other stated conditions match A |
| H: £200 | Different purchase conditions | Same model, standard pack, new and UK, but requires membership and a trade-in |

B establishes a £30 item-price saving against A: 10% of £300. In this example, A has free shipping and B has + £8 shipping. Shipping is disclosed separately and does not change that item-price decision. Shipping for C-H is unknown/may be added; no delivered totals are established.

C-H cannot establish a lower like-for-like price against A on these facts. E might appeal to someone who wants a keyboard; compare that complete bundle separately. H needs its own eligible-buyer comparison.

## Why a matching identifier is not enough

Under [GS1's assortment rule](https://ref.gs1.org/standards/gtin-management/1.1.0/), changing an item in a fixed physical bundle requires a new GTIN. But [Google's listing rules](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en) let a seller-created bundle use the main product's GTIN. That is why you must read the included-items list even when numbers match.

Google also instructs sellers to use manufacturer GTINs for used products while declaring condition separately. Do not infer new condition from a familiar barcode. Conversely, different numbers need investigation, not an automatic conclusion that the underlying devices differ: check package and market details with the manufacturer.

## Read condition and region as separate fields

For refurbished, used or open-box stock, ask about wear, testing, missing accessories, battery information where relevant, returns and the named warranty provider. The [FTC's marketplace guidance](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buying-online-marketplace) recommends actual-item photographs and written answers. A stock photo cannot establish the condition of that unit.

For an unfamiliar regional version, confirm the full model suffix, intended market, compatibility and supplied plug or keyboard where relevant. Read the warranty terms for your country. Do not treat a language selector or the seller's location as proof of the product's region.

## Pause when these details disagree

- **A broad title.** The title names a family; the selected option names a different capacity or generation. Check after selecting.
- **An accessory price.** A replacement case, compatible cable or single earbud is not the complete product shown in the headline.
- **A conditional amount.** A monthly instalment, trade-in balance or member price is not an ordinary outright price. Record the requirement.
- **An invented bundle deduction.** Do not subtract the seller's claimed accessory value to manufacture a standalone device price.

Once the offers match, enter their verified amounts in the [price-comparison worksheet](https://shopping.muchita.ai/tools/price-comparison/). For an event shopping list, use the [Prime Big Deal Days guide](https://shopping.muchita.ai/guides/prime-big-deal-days/) alongside these identity checks.

## Questions and answers

### Is the same model name enough?

No. Confirm the complete code and selected variant, then package, condition, region and purchase terms.

### Are MPN and GTIN the same?

No. An MPN is manufacturer-assigned; a GTIN is a trade-item identifier. Record both when available.

### Does a valid GTIN prove authenticity?

No. Number validity and associated records do not authenticate the physical unit a seller will deliver.

### What if the cheaper colour suits me?

Compare that colour separately. It may be a useful alternative, but it is not the original exact variant.

### Can I compare refurbished with new?

Yes, as a choice between conditions. Do not present the difference as a like-for-like saving on new stock.

### What if the seller omits the model suffix?

Ask for the full code and region. Leave the match unresolved until the answer supports it.

### Does unknown shipping block an item-price comparison?

No. Disclose unknown/may be added, compare eligible matching item prices, and avoid inventing a delivered total.
