# World Book Day 2027: date, £1 books and easy costume ideas

Published by Muchita Shopping · Updated 2026-10-09 · Canonical: https://shopping.muchita.ai/guides/world-book-day-2027/

UK World Book Day is Thursday 4 March 2027. The [official announcement](https://www.worldbookday.com/news/world-book-day-2027-announcements/) says the £1 / €1.50 books arrive on 11 February. Token redemption runs 11 February-21 March 2027. Start with a book the child wants to read, then decide whether dressing up adds anything. A bought costume is not the starting requirement.

## In short

- The 18-title announcement covers 12 main-programme books, two Ireland titles, one Wales title and three Scottish Gaelic titles. It does not promise all 18 in every shop.
- Bring the eligible token to a participating bookseller for the token-book exchange. Do not plan an online token redemption. Check the exact 2027 token and local stock nearer the date.
- The simple craft ideas below are Muchita suggestions inspired by book titles. They are not official character costumes or claims about the stories.

> Dates and book list checked on 9 October 2026. Craft ideas are Muchita’s, not official World Book Day character costumes. Muchita is not affiliated with the charity and receives no affiliate commission.

## The three dates to put in your diary

These dates come from the [2027 announcement](https://www.worldbookday.com/news/world-book-day-2027-announcements/) and the 2027-specific item in the [official FAQ](https://www.worldbookday.com/about-us/frequently-asked-questions/). Some other FAQ items still show 2026 dates; do not copy those into a 2027 plan. The international UNESCO observance on 23 April is a separate event.

| Date | What it means | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 11 February 2027 | Announced book release and start of token redemption | The 2027 token and participating retailer; actual stock |
| 4 March 2027 | UK World Book Day | The school may arrange its celebration separately |
| 21 March 2027 | Announced final day of the redemption window | Shop opening hours and remaining eligible stock |

## All 18 announced books, with simple prop ideas

The titles and regional grouping follow the [official book list](https://www.worldbookday.com/books/). Every craft suggestion is our own optional title-inspired idea. We have not recreated book illustrations, read every story or verified an official costume for these titles. Choosing a book does not oblige the child to dress up.

## Six simple outfits from things already at home

These are Muchita’s title-inspired reading roles, not official costumes or claims about a book’s characters. Choose the child’s book first, ask what feels comfortable, and follow the school’s rules. An outfit is optional. Adult help with cutting may be useful.

- **Print six simple reading-role badges** Our original A4 SVG sheet has six badges for the roles above. Use scrap paper if you prefer; a printed badge is optional. It contains no official logos or book illustrations. [Open the printable badge sheet (SVG)](https://shopping.muchita.ai/guides/world-book-day-2027/book-badges.svg)

- **Blue book agent** Use a blue top already owned, or any comfortable top. Fold scrap paper into a pocket notebook. On its cover, write the book title and one question the child wants answered. Carry it as a book agent’s notebook; leave out toy weapons, masks and a bought licensed outfit.
- **Space reader** Start with ordinary dark clothing or a space/dinosaur top already owned. Draw a star on scrap card and put the book title underneath. Carry the card with the book, rather than building a bulky helmet. The child can explain which adventure they want to read.
- **Reading record holder** Use a sports top or everyday clothing. Fold a piece of paper into a certificate: “My reading recommendation”, followed by the book title and one reason to try it. Carry the certificate; do not turn the activity into a fastest-reader competition.
- **Book baker** Try an apron already at home over comfortable clothing; it is optional. Cut or draw a paper cake and write the book title on the back. Carry the book and paper cake. No real food, flour on clothing or new baking equipment is needed.
- **Number-block reader** Choose a coloured top already owned. Draw a small grid of numbered squares on scrap card and write the book title underneath. Carry this card as a prop; avoid building a box outfit that makes sitting or moving difficult.
- **Green reading explorer** Use a green top already owned, or ordinary clothes. Fold scrap paper into a leaf and add the book title. Carry the leaf with the book. No face paint, outdoor equipment or character-specific outfit is required.

## Get the book before buying a costume

Use the [official token page](https://www.worldbookday.com/books-and-tokens/book-token/) for the current token format and rules, and the [participating bookseller page](https://www.worldbookday.com/books-and-tokens/participating-retailers-events/) to plan a visit. As checked on 9 October, the retailer page still carries 2026 material; the FAQ says the map will be available in December. We are not treating an old map as a confirmed 2027 shop list.

The token-book exchange takes place at a participating bookseller. Ask about the exact book and local availability. The regional additions do not mean all 18 titles are in every shop. For another full-price book or audiobook, read the current token discount terms rather than assuming any purchase qualifies.

## Five things you do not need to buy

- **A brand-new licensed outfit.** Try clothes already owned, a scrap-card bookmark or no costume. Put the child’s reading choice first.
- **A prop for every detail.** One small title card or bookmark is enough for our craft suggestions. Do not turn a book into a shopping list.
- **A costume selected by a fixed age category.** The 2027 scheme removes book category labels and has no dedicated Teen title. Let the child choose a book that interests them.
- **An online basket expecting token redemption.** The official FAQ excludes online token purchases. Use the participating in-person scheme instead.
- **A claim of an official 2027 theme.** The FAQ says World Book Day does not suggest a theme. School rules and our craft ideas are separate from the official book programme.

## If print or dressing up is difficult

The charity lists routes for braille, large print and audio on its [accessible-copy page](https://www.worldbookday.com/about-us/diversity-and-inclusion/). Contact the relevant organisation nearer the event for format availability and eligibility. Do not assume a specific 2027 copy can already be ordered from this guide.

A comfortable reading activity, a spoken recommendation or a bookmark can work without an outfit. Ask the school for the child’s preferred way to join in. The plan tool can produce a no-dressing-up checklist to share with another caregiver.

## A ten-minute plan with the child

- **If you choose to buy one missing item** Compare checked offers in the mobile worksheet. On a computer, Muchita Shopping for Chrome can help search for the exact garment or accessory. A costume purchase is optional. [Open the comparison worksheet](https://shopping.muchita.ai/tools/price-comparison/#c=GBP|A,,1,pcs,|B,,1,pcs,)

1. **Ask about the book.** Choose a book the child actually wants to explore, including a library book or one at home. Check the school’s date and rules.
2. **Choose how to participate.** Try the smallest title-inspired prop above, reuse clothing or skip dressing up. Check comfort while sitting and moving.
3. **Arrange the book route.** For the token scheme, check the 2027 token and nearer-date participating shop and stock. For accessible formats, contact the organisation on the official page.
4. **Only compare an item if it is needed.** If you still choose to buy clothing, match size, material, condition, item price and return terms. Show delivery separately. Share or print the school-day checklist for another caregiver.
