Raspberry Pi 5 buying decision · Updated September 25, 2026
Pi 5 power supply:
what does 5V actually say?
A charger can advertise 27W or more yet offer only 3A at 5V. Raspberry Pi 5 can start with a good 5V/3A supply, but its USB devices then get a much smaller shared power budget. Check the output profile and your peripherals before buying a supply or an SSD enclosure.

In short
Raspberry Pi documents 5V/3A as enough to boot a Pi 5, with downstream USB current restricted to 600mA. That is a shared limit, not 600mA per port.
When the Pi 5 detects a USB-PD supply that can deliver 5A at 5V, its downstream USB limit rises to 1.6A. A label showing high wattage only at 9V or 12V does not establish this 5V mode.
The check below interprets the specifications you enter. It cannot certify a particular charger, cable, enclosure or seller listing, and it does not show current prices.

The short answer
The 5V profile matters more than the wattage headline
The Raspberry Pi USB documentation says a good USB-C supply delivering 3A at 5V can boot a Pi 5. In that mode, the combined downstream USB current is restricted to 600mA. A detected 5V/5A USB-PD supply raises that combined limit to 1.6A. The fan header shares this budget, so it is not a per-port promise.
Read the output table for the exact port you will use. A 30W or 65W headline can come from higher-voltage modes while its 5V mode remains 3A. Even a stated 5V/5A profile does not prove that a particular Pi, supply and cable will negotiate it. A high-current limiter setting can also be forced without negotiation, so the check below keeps the physical power question qualified.
| What you can verify | Pi 5 downstream USB limit | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Good 5V/3A supply | 600mA combined | May boot; check every attached USB device and consider a powered hub. |
| Pi successfully negotiates a 5V/5A USB-PD supply | 1.6A combined | More room for peripherals, but check their actual draw and the fan. |
| Only total watts, another voltage, or unclear negotiation | Unknown from the label | Ask for the exact 5V output and do not infer a 1.6A limit. |

These are Raspberry Pi's documented board limits, not a measured result for any supply. The checker is below.

What USB-power limit can you expect?
Enter only the current stated for the 5V mode of your chosen port. The result does not inspect your supply, cable, Pi or USB devices.
Confirm the actual supply, cable and operating-system mode before relying on a connected setup. This is not a safety certification or an offer check.
Choose the exact power-supply model and regional plug first. Then compare your matching item prices or ask Muchita Shopping to check current offers while you browse on desktop Chrome.
The USB SSD question
An SSD enclosure makes the power budget real
An external SSD can draw power through its USB enclosure, and its draw can change during start-up or writes. The enclosure, other USB devices and fan share the available budget. The label 'USB SSD' alone does not tell you whether the whole setup fits 600mA or 1.6A. Check the enclosure and all planned devices, or use an externally powered USB hub when their demands exceed the limit. If you intend to boot from a USB SSD, Raspberry Pi says USB boot is disabled by default on a 3A supply. It documents overrides, but an override does not increase the supply's actual capacity.
Raspberry Pi recommends its 27W USB-C supply for Pi 5. The useful specification is its 5V/5A mode, not the 27W name. A third-party multi-port charger may renegotiate when another device is connected, so recheck the Pi's reported mode after changing the ports in use.
- Check the exact 5V mode. Use the output rating for the chosen USB-C port with the other ports occupied as you expect. Do not substitute a 9V or 12V wattage for 5V current.
- Count the shared load. Look up the actual SSD enclosure, fan and other USB devices. Neither 600mA nor 1.6A is a promise that every drive will work.
- Keep a fallback. If the required current is unclear or high, an externally powered hub can supply USB devices separately. Confirm the hub and cable specifications too.
At the product listing
A power-supply listing needs more than a watt number
Before ordering, record the exact power-supply model, the 5V output profile, USB-PD support, the cable's current rating, plug for your region and what is actually in the box. A seller's generic 'Pi compatible' title cannot settle missing electrical details. If you own the supply already, vcgencmd get_config usb_max_current_enable reports the USB-current limiter setting. It does not prove USB-PD negotiation: the setting can be forced in configuration. Check the supply and cable as well.
The tool asks for facts you can read or observe. It does not inspect a listing, connect to your Pi, measure a cable or validate an enclosure. Its 'unknown' answer is deliberate when a material fact is missing.
Once you have chosen the exact supply and regional plug, compare only offers for that same model, package and condition. Check availability, currency, tax basis and membership; rank by verified item price and show shipping separately.
Before checkout
Check the supply, then compare matching offers
This is a five-minute specification screen, not an electrical test or live price survey.
Read the 5V output
Find the exact current available at 5V on the USB-C port you intend to use. Do not infer it from the total watts or a higher-voltage profile.
Check the high-current setting
A 5V/5A USB-PD rating is a candidate for the higher Pi 5 USB limit. After connection, check the Pi's limiter setting and whether configuration forced it; a high setting alone does not prove 5V/5A negotiation.
Check the peripherals
List the SSD enclosure, fan and USB devices and their power needs. Use a powered hub if their requirements exceed the shared downstream limit.
Match the exact seller offer
Check model, regional plug, included cable, condition, availability, item price, tax and membership before comparing sellers. Record shipping separately.
Stop before guessing
What the check cannot decide from a label
A good specification screen can rule out a mistaken assumption. It cannot reproduce a physical load test or promise that a particular third-party supply, cable and SSD enclosure work together.
- The label lists only watts. Ask for the exact 5V current and USB-PD profile on the intended port.
- The high-current setting was forced. Do not infer a negotiated 5V/5A supply from a limiter flag. Check the real supply, cable and configuration.
- USB SSD boot on a 3A supply. USB boot is disabled by default in this case. Raspberry Pi documents overrides, but they do not make an undersized supply adequate for a drive.
- An external SSD is assumed to fit. Find its real power requirement, including its enclosure, and account for the fan and other USB devices.
- Two sellers call different plugs the same model. Confirm the complete regional SKU and included cable before judging item prices.

Questions and answers
Fair questions,
plain answers.
Will a 5V/3A supply run a Raspberry Pi 5?
Raspberry Pi says a good 5V/3A USB-C supply can boot the Pi 5. It then restricts the combined downstream USB current to 600mA. That does not certify your particular charger, cable or peripherals.
Does a 27W or 30W label mean 5V/5A?
No. Total advertised watts may come from a higher-voltage mode. Read the exact 5V current for the port you will use. Raspberry Pi's own 27W supply has a 5V/5A mode, but another 27W or 30W product may differ.
When does the Pi 5 allow 1.6A to USB devices?
When its firmware detects a suitable 5V/5A USB-PD supply, Raspberry Pi documents a 1.6A combined downstream limit. Check the mode actually detected rather than relying only on a listing claim.
Can I use a USB SSD with a 3A supply?
Possibly as a connected drive if its real draw fits the combined 600mA limit. If you intend to boot from it, USB boot is disabled by default on a 3A supply. Raspberry Pi documents overrides, but the actual power demand still matters. This page has not tested your setup.
Is the 600mA or 1.6A limit per port?
No. Raspberry Pi presents it as the combined power budget for downstream USB devices; its documentation also notes the fan header shares the budget.
Does this page show the cheapest Pi 5 power supply?
No current seller price or stock was checked for this page. Choose the exact supply and plug first, then ask Muchita Shopping to compare eligible matching offers while you browse. Confirm the full purchase terms before buying.
